A magic taste of Lisbon: The Sardine

Two years may have passed since my last visit to the enchanting city of Lisbon, but the memory of its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and, most importantly, its iconic sardine remains as fresh as the day I left.

Portugal’s capital is a city that wears its heart on its sleeve, and nowhere is this more evident than in its deep-rooted love affair with the humble sardine.

This small, oily fish has transcended its status as a mere seafood delicacy to become an integral part of Portuguese identity. From the bustling fishing ports to the city’s historic center, the sardine is everywhere. It’s grilled to perfection at street festivals, canned and savored as a culinary delight, and even celebrated in art and design.

The annual Festival of Saint Anthony, held in June, is a testament to the sardine’s cultural significance. The city comes alive with the aroma of grilled sardines as locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy this beloved treat. Streets are adorned with colorful decorations featuring the sardine, and the festive atmosphere is infectious.

My love affair with Lisbon and its sardine culture extended to my home decor when I discovered the whimsical ceramic creations of Bordallo Pinheiro. From playful figurines to functional kitchenware, each piece of this renowned Portuguese brand is a delightful celebration of the country’s rich culture and nature’s spirit with a bohemian twist. Take a look at their original, amazing, simple yet elegantly crafted earthenware:

Their ceramic sardines, with their playful designs and vibrant colors, captured the essence of the city perfectly. I proudly displayed three of these charming pieces on my kitchen wall. However, a recent mishap led to the loss of one, leaving a noticeable gap. Determined to restore the trio, I embarked on a quest to find replacements.

You can easily bring a piece of Lisbon magic into your home too! I’ve found a fantastic selection of Bordallo Pinheiro online, and sure enough I will be back for more.
